Asian skincare is a growing trend around the world. Online companies as well as brick and mortar stores continue to pop-up, selling Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese products globally. What makes Asian skincare special? A focus on hard-hitting ingredients and a customizable approach to skin. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for your skin, and Korean skincare especially uses a number of single, powerful solutions rather than one mediocre one.
In the Korean skincare routine, you’ll find upwards of 10 steps that are each customized to your wants and needs for your skin. Have acne troubles? Look for alpha hydroxy acids. Need moisture? Look for hyaluronic acid. Each step in the routine is unique for the individual to highlight and troubleshoot skin problems. Each step focuses on a different ingredient for a different benefit.
One key ingredient in asian skincare is vitamin C. Vitamin C is a mild acid known for brightening the skin. It’s great for reducing scarring, providing mild exfoliation, and evening the tone of skin. It aids in reducing the post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation caused by acne.
There are several factors to consider when looking at vitamin C as a skincare ingredient.
Recommended Vitamin C Serums
CosRX Triple C Lightening Serum
Description: This item contains 20.5% vitamin C in the form of L-AA, along with black chokeberry to increase stability. This serum is also created in small batches to increase the freshness upon delivery. As such, it can be harder to obtain and sells out very fast. CosRX is a very popular Korean skincare brand with great ingredients and excellent customer service.
OST C21.5 Vitamin Advanced Serum
Description: This item contains 21.5% vitamin C in the form of L-AA. It has only 10 ingredients, and is made without parabens in order to decrease the possibility for irritation. This is a cult favorite in the Asian beauty community and is recommended time and again for the great concentration of L-AA.
Timeless Vitamin C+E+Ferulic Acid Serum
Description: This item is made in the USA and contains 20% L-AA. In addition, this is formulated with both vitamin E and ferulic acid to increase stability. This is a bit of a newcomer to the world of Vitamin C and although it’s made in the United States, it abides by the Korean skincare rule of great ingredients with a single focus.
As with any skincare product, introduce the new item slowly and be sure to patch test. Skincare is very much a personal situation and what works for one person might not work for another. It can take up to four weeks to see a difference in your skin after introducing a new product.
