They may have just released the soundtrack to your summer. After weeks of teasing a new song on social media, the band you probably haven’t heard since high school released their most recent song yesterday, titled “Champion.” And it’s most likely going to be stuck in your head all day. Possibly even for the rest of the year. Originally published via Modest Truth Mag on June 21, 2017.
Asian skincare is a growing trend around the world. Online companies as well as brick and mortar stores continue to pop-up, selling Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese products globally. What makes Asian skincare special? A focus on hard-hitting ingredients and a customizable approach to skin. There is no one-size-fits-all approach for your skin, and Korean skincare especially uses a number of single, powerful solutions rather than one mediocre one. In our previous post on Korean Beauty, we discussed Vitamin C, the wonderful brightener that can help even your skin tone and reduce the appearance of scars and post inflammatory hyper-pigmentation. This month, we’re talking about snail filtrate! Yes, snails. The slippery, slimy creatures you find in your garden or (in certain restaurants) on your plate. But wait, before you run away screaming, let’s discuss the power of snail slime. Originally published via Modest Truth Mag on June 14, 2017. Alexandria, Virginia - What started as a casual game of baseball among congressional staffers and representatives ended in bloodshed on Wednesday, June 14th. A shooter, currently believed to be in police custody, opened fire on the staffers and law enforcement present for a practice game. Among the wounded is House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was shot in the hip while standing next to second base. He was badly injured, but is currently in stable condition. He managed to crawl to the dugout to get away from the gunman. Other injured include a congressional aide, as yet unidentified, and two law enforcement officials who are part of Scalise’s security detail. Luckily, the quick thinking of Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, a physician and veteran of the war in Iraq, saved Scalise as he used his training to stop the bleeding and keep the man stable until help arrived. In addition, Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., reportedly used his belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding of the congressional staffer that had been shot in the leg. A helicopter landed on the field to take the wounded to nearby hospitals as survivors called friends and family. Those living nearby heard the gunshots and saw people running into the parking lots, weaving between cars and sprinting away from the active shooter. One man even ran downstairs and directed a congressman into his apartment to keep him safe from the gunfire. Another resident was out walking their dog when they heard police yelling at the gunman to drop his weapon. Schools in the area were placed on lockdown until the situation was under control, although reports indicate that the man was a lone shooter with a single weapon. Currently reports show that this was a deliberate attack. According to Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., a man had asked him in the parking lot if it was Republicans or Democrats practicing. Minutes later, the shooting started. The shooter is reported to have had a rifle with “lots of ammo” and managed to get off 50-100 shots before the security detail incapacitated him. The gunman was shot and wounded and then taken into police custody when they arrived on the scene. Not far away from chaos, Democrats were also practicing for the annual congressional baseball game. They heard later about the events that unfolded a few miles away and many sent out messages on Twitter about the situation. Politicians across the country expressed their sincere gratitude for the Capitol Hill police for their fast response time, and condemned the actions of the reportedly politically charged shooting. President Trump released a statement that he and VP Mike Pence were aware of the shooting, and then later Tweeted: "Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.” While police presence has increased at Capitol Hill due to the incident, the building is still open for business. Everyone struggles with stress, some more than others. And as the mercury rises outside, you may find that tempers are flaring inside as well. When you’re stressed, sad, or in any way upset, it can be easy to let it eat away at you. But no more! Technology comes to the rescue, and never has the saying been truer: “There’s an app for that.” Here are the best mental health apps for when you need to find your focus (and your chill). We’re sitting on the couch in a cool room, escaping from the Southern summer heat, listening to the laughter of children and family just audible over the hum of a fan. People are walking in and out, making preparations for a birthday party that, just three short years ago, Maribeth would have missed. “It was a big leap of faith.” Originally published via Modest Truth Mag on June 13, 2017. The lights of New York blink and shimmer in the surprisingly chilly summer night. A line is forming outside of the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, a younger crowd than the usual Broadway spectators huddling together against the line. Band t-shirts dot the crowd, and people pose not with the posters of Lola, but with Charlie Price. To an outsider, it’s an odd change from the norm. But if you know the actor who is playing Charlie, well, it all makes sense. Brendon Urie, grammy nominated rock star and longtime Broadway fan, is taking his first bold steps onto the stage. And he’s doing it in heels. In the video post announcing his part in Kinky Boots, Brendon expressed that it was “dream come true.” He grew up with musicals, and he had always wanted to be a part of one. And now that he’s stepped onto the stage, many people are left hoping that he continues to play a part in Broadway. Kinky Boots is a 5 time Tony Award Winner, currently basking in the glow of their 5th straight year on Broadway. With music written by Cyndi Lauper, the play speaks of love, acceptance, and making your own way in the world. Never has there been a more appropriate time for such a message, especially as we celebrate Pride month. Brendon plays as straight-laced Charlie Price, the son of a shoemaker, who inherits a failing factory making shoes that no one wants. He struggles with a plan for the factory, and is on the verge of firing all of the employees when he meets Lola. Lola is a drag queen, and an excellent one. She finds herself breaking more boots than she can count because the sexy heels she desires just aren’t made for the body of a man. The two end up working together to create a delightfully sexy, gloriously sparkly line of “kinky boots,” made with mountains of sass and a heaping helping of glitter. But their time together isn’t without its ups and downs. As Brendon says, you’ll leave with “a fire in [your] chest.” Especially with stunning performances from all of the cast, not just the famous lead singer. J. Harrison Ghee makes an absolutely amazing Lola, with tons of heart and sass for the whole crowd. Taylor Louderman is hilarious as Lauren, with her antics bringing the crowd to tears. Daniel Stewart Sherman makes a great Don, with his old-school style a heart-wrenching nod to acceptance of others. And with Brendon singing the lines of emotionally-conflicted Charlie Price, you end up with a great cast that will make you laugh, make you cry, and then do it all over again. Kinky Boots is, by far, one of the best plays on Broadway right now. Catch Brendon Urie in the show until August 6th, and expect to be wowed with amazing musical numbers and absolutely mind-blowing choreography. You’ll want to go again and again. I knew that I did before the show was even over, my eyes wide during the final musical number, trying to watch the many pairs of kinky boots strutting across the stage.
